SUMMARY Active in graphics and GUI design for video, print and interactive media since 1991. I have a broad base of experience to apply to any digital design project. As a digital designer, I've been focusing on the Internet and software sectors since 1992.

Conversant with issues and techniques in interaction design, usability, online learning and product documentation. I'm technically proficient and experienced in professional software design processes.

CAREER HISTORY

Sept. 2006 - Present: AirPatrol Research Corporation
Technical Support Designer

Responsibilities Included:

  • Preparing photography and illustrations for technical and promotional materials
  • Graphic design and pre-press: lexan product labels and plaques, business cards, brochures, working with local and remote printers
  • Created interactive Flash-based product demonstrations, and auto-run menus for promotional CDROMs and DVDROMs.
  • Wrote and illustrated product manuals, online help systems, and other end-user documentation
  • Assisted in copy writing and proofreading of press releases, white papers, and other technical and marketing documents.
  • Assisted in software/hardware testing and developing and documenting test plans.
  • Answered customer support inquiries, and helped to develop internal support systems.
  • Created and maintained staff email accounts, aided in spam protection/prevention.

Sept. 2002 - Sept. 2006: Vancouver English Centre (www.vec.ca)
Webmaster/Web Designer

Responsibilities Included:

  • Updating, redesigning and backing-up all company web sites, comprising thousands of individual pages written in HTML, Cold Fusion, JavaScript or PHP. Monitoring/recording performance of VEC's dedicated web server. Providing periodic reports on web site traffic, popularity, search engine ranking, etc. Sourcing, ordering, and managing of domain names.
  • Increasing site popularity by improving crawlability, inbound links, RSS propagation, and integrating popular tools/services (e.g. free ESL news and online tests, student website builder tools, a public discussion board, and a custom browser toolbar). Added to web revenue by integrating AdSense into major web sites. Managed customers who advertise on our web sites.
  • Graphic designer and consultant on promotional ads, brochures, documents, web graphics/banners, slideshow presentations.
  • Managing staff email accounts and spam protection; assisting in other network security issues. Providing technical support and training for over 20 Marketing and Administrative staff at the Vancouver campus. Worked with outside contractors or technical support staff whenever required.

Major Accomplishments:

  • VEC Online Education" (vec-online.ca): System integration, graphic design, project management, and promotion of VEC's first english grammar e-courses. Developed early business requirements and championed project through to public web launch.
  • Cosmetic redesign of all major web sites including vec.ca and study-mexico.com.
  • Conversation Cathy - VEC's popular interactive English pronunciation coach speaks over 40 word pairs and 37 pieces of dialogue in clearly-spoken Canadian English. Created using the SitePal API, with lots of custom Javscript menus and event handlers. A SitePal "Site of the Day".
  • Led redesign efforts on hundreds of other company web pages on numerous domains by training staff to use in-house CRM system, Dreamweaver, Contribute and custom page templates.
  • Led the selection of a new ISP and the migration of Cold Fusion sites and datasources, reducing cost and improving reliability of all public web sites.
  • Increased staff productivity by improving functionality/features of proprietary web-based administrative tools (e.g. sales agent management database, online student registration system, student test results, etc.)
  • Championed, created and managed numerous promotional email lists containing thousands of subscribers.

Part-time consultant to a small business. Experience included programming (ARexx), developing and maintaining a BBS, creating 3D animation, video effects and titling for promotional videos, and designing newspaper ads.

Responsibilities Included:

Created 2D/3D computer animations for the educational TV series "Material and Form", researched technical and graphical methods, and provided general project support.

Major Accomplishments:

"Material and Form", an award-winning ten-part educational telecourse teaching processes, materials, history, and techniques for building and making three-dimensional art. Each episode required 20-30 seconds of animation to describe a particular material or process.

Worked with Elementary and Secondary art students, introducing them to computer paint programs. Initiated project combining students' CG with hand-drawn or appropriated images; explored creative uses of printers, copiers and video equipment.
